As the ark entered Jerusalem, King David danced before the LORD with all his might — while someone watching from a window despised him in her heart. Who was it?

A closer look

David brought the ark of God from Obed-Edom’s house to the City of David with rejoicing. Wearing a linen ephod, he danced before the Lord with all his might as the people brought up the ark with shouts and the sound of trumpets (2 Samuel 6:12–15).

The woman at the window was Michal, Saul’s daughter and David’s wife. The passage names her directly and tells us that, when she saw David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart (2 Samuel 6:16).

When David returned home to bless his household, Michal came out to meet him and criticized his behavior. David answered that his celebration had been before the Lord, who had chosen him to lead Israel. His response included these words: “I will celebrate before the LORD” (2 Samuel 6:20–22).

As for the other answers: the woman watching from the window is not Abigail, Bathsheba, or Zeruiah. The text identifies her as Michal, daughter of Saul.

There is another lovely detail in the celebration: David blessed the people and gave food to everyone in the crowd (2 Samuel 6:18–19). His rejoicing included sharing good things with others. Alongside today’s verse, that gives us a simple invitation: remember God’s goodness, thank Him for it, and let someone else share in your gladness. Joy can become a song of praise, a generous gesture, or a moment enjoyed together.
