THE QUESTION

The night before the cross, Jesus prayed in Gethsemane in such anguish that Luke, a doctor, recorded a detail about His sweat. What did he write?

A closer look

After the Last Supper, Jesus walked out to the Mount of Olives with His disciples, as He often did, and went a stone’s throw beyond them to pray alone. What He prayed was completely honest: “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:39-42).

Luke is the only Gospel writer who tells us what happened next, and he was a physician, so the detail is a doctor’s detail. An angel came and strengthened Him, and in His anguish He prayed even harder, until His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground (Luke 22:43-44).

When He got up and went back to His friends, He found them asleep, worn out by their own sorrow. He woke them with a question that still applies to us: “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation” (Luke 22:45-46).

As for the other answers: none of them appear anywhere in the Gospels. Only Luke records the sweat, and he records it once.

That night is today’s verse lived out by Jesus Himself. He said exactly what He felt, then He handed it over to the Father. The cross still came the next morning. So did the strength to face it.
