Trivia Answer: What Did Jesus Do When Peter Began to Sink?

His hand reached Peter before the wind died down.

THE ANSWER IS C

He reached out His hand and caught him.

“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.”

THE QUESTION

Peter began sinking and cried, “Lord, save me!” What does Matthew say Jesus did immediately?

A) Told the disciples to bring the boat closer

B) Commanded the wind to stop

C) Reached out His hand and caught him  ✓

D) Told Peter to keep walking

A closer look

Peter had stepped out of the boat at Jesus’ invitation. He was walking toward Him on the water, but when he saw the wind, he became afraid and began to sink. His prayer was a cry for help (Matthew 14:28–30).

Matthew’s next word is “Immediately.” Jesus reached for Peter and caught him. Only then does Matthew record Jesus speaking to him about his little faith and asking why he doubted. The helping hand came before the question (Matthew 14:31).

There is another detail worth noticing: the wind died down when they climbed into the boat. Peter had already been caught. Then the disciples worshiped Jesus and acknowledged Him as the Son of God (Matthew 14:32–33).

As for the other answers: Matthew does not say Jesus first called the boat closer, commanded the wind to stop, or told Peter to keep walking. He records Jesus’ immediate response as reaching out and catching him.

Peter was being held before the wind died down. That order is worth remembering alongside today’s verse. We can ask Christ for help in the middle of our fear, rather than waiting until we feel brave enough. His care is not limited to our strongest moments.

See you tomorrow for a new verse, prayer, and trivia. Have a blessed day. ♡
