A closer look

Psalm 126 is one of the songs of ascents. It looks back on the day the Lord restored His people: “we were like those who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter” (Psalm 126:1-2). Then it asks Him to do it again, and gives this promise to those still sowing in tears.

The next verse says those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will come home with songs of joy, “carrying sheaves with them” (Psalm 126:6). It’s the verse behind the old hymn “Bringing in the Sheaves.”

Ecclesiastes is close in spirit: it says there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh” (Ecclesiastes 3:4). But the promise of reaping with joy is in Psalm 126.

Today’s verse makes a harvest promise too: “at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).
