Mordecai

It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.

THE QUESTION

One night, King Xerxes couldn’t sleep, so he had the royal records read to him. They showed that one man had saved his life and never been rewarded. Who was it?

A closer look

Years earlier, Mordecai had uncovered a plot to kill the king (Esther 2:21–23). It was written down and forgotten, until the night the king couldn’t sleep.

The next morning, Haman came to ask for Mordecai’s death. Instead, the king had Haman lead Mordecai through the city on the royal horse, in the king’s robe (Esther 6:10–11). God is never named in Esther, but He was at work all night. In the end, their “sorrow was turned into joy” (Esther 9:22).
