A closer look

The promise comes in Isaiah’s very first chapter. God’s people had drifted far from Him, and yet He didn’t push them away. He invited them back: “Come now, let us settle the matter.”

In Bible times, scarlet and crimson were deep, lasting dyes, not easy to wash out of cloth. That’s the picture God chose, so no one would think their sin was too dark for Him to make clean.

If you thought of the Psalms, you were close. David prayed, “wash me, and I will be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7).

It’s the same promise as today’s verse: God will “purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
