A closer look

Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, while the other prisoners listened (Acts 16:25). Suddenly a violent earthquake shook the prison. All the doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose (Acts 16:26).

The jailer woke, saw the open doors and was sure his prisoners were gone. But Paul shouted, “We are all here!” (Acts 16:27-28). The jailer fell trembling before them and asked how he could be saved. That same night he and his whole household believed, and he was “filled with joy” (Acts 16:29-34).

Following an angel out makes sense: that’s how Peter left his prison, when an angel woke him and his chains fell off (Acts 12:7-9).

Paul and Silas sang before they knew how the night would end. That’s the praise in today’s verse: “I will yet praise Him” (Psalm 42:11).
