A closer look

Saul was the son of Kish, from the tribe of Benjamin. When his father’s donkeys went missing, Kish sent Saul and a servant to look for them (1 Samuel 9:3). They searched for days and found nothing, and Saul was ready to give up and go home (1 Samuel 9:5).

But his servant suggested asking a man of God in a nearby town. That man was Samuel, and the day before, God had told him to expect a man from Benjamin (1 Samuel 9:16). When Saul arrived, Samuel told him, “As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found” (1 Samuel 9:20). The next morning, Samuel anointed Saul ruler over Israel (1 Samuel 10:1).

Saul went out looking for what was lost, and God was guiding every step of the search. In today’s verse, it’s the Shepherd who does the searching, and He keeps looking until He finds His lost sheep.
