A closer look

Mephibosheth was the son of David’s dear friend Jonathan, and the grandson of King Saul, who had hunted David for years. He had been lame in both feet since a fall when he was five (2 Samuel 4:4). When the king sent for him, he bowed down and called himself “a dead dog” (2 Samuel 9:8).

But David gave him back his family’s land and a place at the king’s table, “like one of the king’s sons” (2 Samuel 9:11). He came expecting to answer for his family’s past. Instead, he found mercy.
