A closer look
Jeremiah’s enemies lowered him into the cistern with ropes and left him sinking in the mud. Then Ebed-Melek, an official in the royal palace, went to the king and asked to save him (Jeremiah 38:6-10).
And he did it with such care. He let down old rags and worn-out clothes and told Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes” (Jeremiah 38:12).
If you thought of an angel or an earthquake, you were remembering two other rescues: the angel who woke Peter (Acts 12:7) and the earthquake that opened the prison for Paul and Silas (Acts 16:26).
That cistern was in the courtyard of the guard, the same place where God told Jeremiah, “Call to Me and I will answer you” (Jeremiah 33:3).
