John the Baptist

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus once received an honest question from someone who loved Him: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Who asked it?

A closer look

John the Baptist spent his life preparing the way for Jesus. When he saw Jesus coming, he told the crowd, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). But later, Herod had John thrown into prison (Matthew 14:3), and from there John sent his disciples to ask Jesus this question.

Jesus didn’t scold him. He sent back a gentle answer: “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk … the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor” (Matthew 11:4-5). Then, as John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus told the crowd that no one born of women was greater than John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11).

Even one of the greatest believers in the Bible had questions, and Jesus met them with kindness. It’s the same kindness we see in today’s verse, when a desperate father cried out, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
