A closer look

Elisha kept warning Israel about the king of Aram’s battle plans, so the king sent horses, chariots and a strong force by night to capture him (2 Kings 6:8-14). Early the next morning, Elisha’s servant saw the army and cried out, “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” Elisha answered, “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (2 Kings 6:15-16).

Then Elisha prayed, and the Lord opened the servant’s eyes (2 Kings 6:17). The story ends with a surprise: instead of killing the captured soldiers, the king of Israel listened to Elisha, gave them a great feast and sent them home. After that, the raids stopped (2 Kings 6:18-23).

If you thought of Elijah, that’s understandable. A chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared when Elijah was taken up to heaven, and Elisha was the one who saw it (2 Kings 2:11-12).

It’s a picture of today’s verse. When the servant could only see the army, fear filled in the rest. When God opened his eyes, he saw who was with them. “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1)
