A closer look
Israel had gathered at Mizpah to pray when the Philistines came up to attack them (1 Samuel 7:7). That day “the LORD thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines,” and Israel won the battle (1 Samuel 7:10).
Samuel didn’t want anyone to forget it. He set up a stone and named it Ebenezer, which means “stone of help,” saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us” (1 Samuel 7:12).
If you chose “God will provide,” you were thinking of Abraham, who gave that name to the mountain where God provided the ram (Genesis 22:14).
Every “thus far” is a reason for hope. The God who has helped you up to this moment is “the God of hope,” and He isn’t finished helping you yet (Romans 15:13).
