A closer look

Deborah was a prophet who was leading Israel at that time. She held court under a tree known as the Palm of Deborah (Judges 4:4-5). When she gave Barak God’s command to go into battle, he said he would go only if she went with him (Judges 4:8). She went, and on the day itself her word to him was simple: “Go!” (Judges 4:14).

If you thought of Moses, that’s a beautiful memory too: he told Joshua, “The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

When Barak hesitated, Deborah reminded him who had gone ahead of him. Today’s verse is a reminder for us too: the Spirit God gave us “does not make us timid” (2 Timothy 1:7).
