A closer look

After meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus, Paul (then called Saul) began preaching in that city that Jesus is the Son of God (Acts 9:20). After many days, some there plotted to kill him and kept watch on the city gates day and night (Acts 9:23-24).

So his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall (Acts 9:25). Years later, Paul still remembered it: “I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands” (2 Corinthians 11:33). The man God would use to write much of the New Testament was carried to safety by a few faithful friends.

Sometimes an ever-present help in trouble looks like a dark night, a basket, and a few people who love you.
